A comprehensive introduction to Ki-Aikido and Ki-Development, our Beginner's Program is an ideal way to begin training, or to review the foundations or our art. Meets: Tuesday 7:00-9:00pm Prerequisite: none Back to top
Bokken Foundations
The bokken is a wooden sword shaped
like the Samurai sword, the katana. Traditionally, bokken were used as
a safe substitute for real swords in Saumrai training. Today, we use
the bokken as a tool for developing mindfullness, clarity, and
relaxation. In this class, you will learn basic principles of mind-body
coordination and basic bokken technique. We will also explore the
application of these principles and techniques to our modern, everyday
lives. As we learn to cut with the bokken, we are also learning to
"cut" through obstacles in our lives. Meets: Wednesday 6:00-6:55pm Prerequisite: none Back to top
Caring for Patients
Many people who care for seniors or patients
struggle with their own well being and experience fatigue and physical
strain. In this class, designed for people who care for others at work
or at home, you will learn to simple techniques to reduce this stress
and create a positive connection with people you provide care for.
Through simple, hands-on exercises that coordinate mind and body you
will learn to assist others in basic activities such as sitting up in
bed, getting out of a chair, and walking while minimizing strain on
both you and those you care for. Meets: Wednesday 7:00-9:00pm Prerequisite: none Back to top
Falling SafelyA 6 week workshop dedicated to learning how to fall without getting hurt. Students progress at their own rate and all levels are welcome. Meets: Tuesday 6:00-6:55pm Prerequisite: none Back to top
Jo Foundations
Practice
of the Jo, which means "stick" in Japanese, is a highly refined art
with a 400 year history in Japan. At just over 4' long, the Jo balances
long reach with speed and agility. Working with the Jo teaches us how
to use balance, rhythm, momentum and centrifugal force to move quickly,
efficiently, and powerfully. Because Jo techniques derive their power
from relaxed movement, Jo exercises also help us to understand the
unity of calm and action and help us cultivate inner calm even when we
are busy. In this class we will learn basic principles of the Jo, and
practice fundamental Jo movements and forms. Meets: Wednesday 6:00-6:55pm Prerequisite: none Back to top
Shodo--The Art of Japanese Calligraphy
Explore the meditative art of Japanese calligraphy in this hands on class. Shodo is a specialized art using a brush and black ink to write Japanese characters. The art involves not only accurate composition of characters, but also the way the brush is handled in their creation, the shading of the ink, and the balanced placement of the characters on the paper.
