Hello Again Everyone! Just a quick note to say CONGRATULATIONS to 5 new Ki Society Shodan Yudansha! There is much here for which we can all be grateful. It takes years of dedication to achieve such an accomplishment. Many people (in addition to the instructors of these students) have worked and trained hard in order to "grow and develop together". Especially important in this endeavor of personal development is to remember the support of family members who also have a shared investment of time and effort. This past weekend at our Instructors Seminar in Raleigh (thank you Case sensei for another wonderful job hosting everyone), Pierce Sensei conducted the examinations and pre-tests that were most successful indeed! So successful in fact that EKF now has 5 new yudansha instructors to help us all grow and develop together. As Pierce Sensei said at the announcement of their promotion, "Now these five can continue their training and rededicate themselves beyond the entry- level (Sho) of instructor (dan) training!" So much for the short lived celebration! Please join me in congratulating the following people and Head Instructors... John Boone, Loudoun Valley Ki Society, Head Instructor Gardner Sensei Tony Barhams, Loudoun Valley Ki Society Ted Barhams, Loudoun Valley Ki Society Tom Barhams, Loudoun Valley Ki Society How bout that! 4 new Shodan from one dojo, including father and sons who have trained and been promoted together for years !!!!!!!!! WOW, that may just be a Ki Society 1st! Chris McKinney, Appalachian Ki-Aikido, Head Instructor Zimmerman Sensei (with help over the years with "Chris moves" to Raleigh with Case Sensei and Greenville with Harrell Sensei) Once again, a heartfelt congratulations to all! With Gratitude, David |

Our annual New Year's Celebration & Rank Exhibition will take place the Saturday of Martin Luther King weekend. We will have a short ceremony to mark the New Year and celebrate our ongoing training, followed by rank exhibitions and a social hour. Youth members will present exhibitions for rank. We will also have two "pre-test" exhibitions from Laurel and Christina who are preparing for their 2nd kyu and 1st kyu ranks.
Following the exhibitions we will have a pot-luck social hour which will last as long as people wish to stay. Please contact Laurel Strand-Crawford with questions about dishes for the pot-luck.
Family, friends and guests are welcome at the event.

Give your training a lift! The Center for Mind-Body Oneness is pleased to announce a Frequent Flier Program which rewards you for doing exactly what you love to do--come train Aikido! It's my way of saying "Thank You" for your participation and filling our dojo with Plus Ki. Here is how it works:
Come to class just 8 times in any given month, and receive a $10 credit at the dojo*. That's right, you get 10 bucks for showing up to Aikido. Credits can be used toward new uniforms, belts, seminar registration, test fees, tuition, or donate your credits to our new Scholarship Fund.**
Are you on a punch-card? There is a program for you too! Use up a 10 punch card within two months and receive a free class. Use the card in one month and receive TWO free classes!***
Of course, there is some fine print. This is a pilot program and may be updated or discontinued at any time without prior notice. Open mat, special events, testing, and private lessons do not count toward Frequent Flier rewards, except for a student using a punch-card to pay for the session. * $10 credit is based on a full price, standard membership. Students with discounted memberships will receive a credit equal to 20% of their monthly tuition. ** Credits will expire after one year. *** If you use a 5 class punch card in one month, you will receive one free class.

Come join us for a screening of the original Star Wars (later re-named Episode IV: A New Hope). This now classic film began as a loose Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress and was heavily influenced by George Lucas's interest in Taoist philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and his friendship with the eminent scholar of comparative religion, Joseph Campbell. The film was a groundbreaking technical achievement, and also created a new genre of science fiction. Unlike earlier sci-fi, Star Wars was set in a dirty "well used universe" and mixed in fantasy elements such as knights, sorcery, princesses and swordplay. The extraordinary film won wide critical and popular acclaim, spawned an enormous franchise and remains one of the top box office draws of all time. Saturday, November 7th 7:00 ~ 9:30 Friends, family and guests are welcome Bring your own floor pillows! |

Mike Waltz Sensei will begin teaching a regular, ongoing Japanese Calligraphy workshop at the dojo one Saturday each month. Waltz Sensei's hands on teaching style easily accommodates all levels of experience from brand-new beginner through experienced practitioner.
Shodo is meditative art and an excellent vehicle for Ki training. As Waltz Sensei explains, "Shodo involves not only accurate composition of characters, but also the way the brush is handled in their creation, the shading of the ink, and the balanced placement of the characters on the paper."
For information about Shodo classes, check out the new Shodo Program Page.
